Welcome to the New 451 Press

Featured

451 Press is relaunching today with an online magazine format, as opposed to the blog network format it held for several years. We still feel very strongly about building a site that shares a wide range of content topics with an authentic voice, but from a management perspective we’re hoping this format will be easier to manage and assure high-quality content. We are still testing out the reins of the new format and will surely be making changes around the site for the next few weeks. When we feel like the dust has settled and the hinges are all oiled, we’ll have an official launch announcement. For now? Please feel free to poke around and enjoy the content we’re trying to put together while testing out the new design. Please use the “Contact” link along the top of the page to send us a message if you find something broken or wonky.

‘Fringe’ Nods To Browncoats

TV Fans sometimes debate over whether or not they appreciate tongue-in-cheek nods from the writers/producers of their favorite shows. Personally? I’m a big fan of them. Especially a recent nod to Joss Whedon from the folks a Fringe who titled their first episode to air in their new timeslot (Friday, 9pm) “The Firefly.” Fans of Whedon’s short-lived “Firefly” (We call ourselves Browncoats) all smiled a bit bitterly at the homage to the other Fox show that died sadly in that same timeslot in 2002.

Browncoats also received a treat when Nathan Fillion dressed in a browncoat as part of a “space cowboy” costume in the 2009 Halloween episode of Castle.

While this Browncoat is also a Fringe fan, I’m hoping it fares better in this new timeslot than the Fillion led sci-fi did in 2002.

Amy Sedaris Crossing All Platforms

Sometimes, when you write for a multi-topic website, you find yourself struggling how to categorize some of your features. Here at 451Press.com we have several main categories where we spotlight items on our sidebar. Most items fit into one of those broad categories. And then sometimes? You struggle. Amy Sedaris is – for all practical purposes – an Entertainer. And this entry is about her YouTube videos. Both of these things would fall under the “Entertainment” category. EXCEPT…do you see what these videos are about? CRAFTING. For someone who first became familiar with Sedaris during her “Strangers With Candy” years, this seems like an impossible pairing. However, I was fortunate to attend the BlogHer conference in 2008 where Sedaris spoke as a craft blogger. I’ve seen that side of her and can attest that it’s just as funny, and these videos most definitely back me up.

These videos are being done to help promote Sedaris’ new book Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People. I guess if there’s anyone who can bring crafting closer to mainstream, it’s Jerri Blank.
